Quick Tip: Using Spray Can Varnish for Sheen Control
When painting models, one often overlooked detail is the sheen or finish of various parts. Even real-world objects reflect light differently depending on the surface, angle, and lighting. By controlling this in our models, we can create a more visually striking and realistic appearance.
In my latest project (Early Großer Hund), I used spray can varnish to fine-tune the sheen across different areas. While many turn to airbrushes for clear coats, spray cans, like my go-to Mr. Super Clear, can work just as well with a little care.
Here’s a before and after example: The gun arm was too glossy, throwing off the balance of the piece. With a couple of light dustings of varnish, I toned it down, bringing the sheen back in line with the rest of the model.
