Maschinen Krieger Dachshund Snow Groundword Tutorial
All your Base are Belong to Big Dig!
Here's a run-through of the products and steps into making a reasonably simple and effective snow display base that doubles duty as a "handle" for taking your model to a show or competition.
We don't want other well-meaning folks who need to move the display to need to touch the model and this is a perfect way to help them out and gives the Hund a great deal of stability and height on the table.
Just yesterday a friend asked for some "must haves" for the groundwork kit and here I'd like to suggest two as seen in the photos.
Air Dry Clay
First, an air-dried clay product. This one happens to be offered by Mr. Hobby but your locally available, generic versions will be fine. I like this one for the color and for the real reason of nostalgia - I've used it a bunch of times before and really like the color but rest assured, once dry i can be painted how we like.
Marble Dust
The next product I think is just really handy to have for your workbench - you will have seen me using it for the micro abrasion effects on the Vega and Luna Hunde for simulating micrometeorite damage and I think we can use that effect further on other, larger models. In this case, it's used for it's intended purpose for the packaging I'm showing as a faux snow effect but even that is a "re-badge". The actual product is known as "Marble Dust and is a manufactured calcium carbonate. It is extra fine, dense, inert and very white. It's used as an additive and filler to acrylic paints and you should be able to pick some up from an art supplies store.
It should be MUCH cheaper than the hobby-branded snow-efect products. Yes, We can use them too but this is one to to also try out.

Next up, I will be using some more acrylic volume-producing products on the Kyklop base that I am working on now and will share that with you shortly, it's another slight increase in complexity.
Hope you like it!
