HAMMERKNIGHT in Progress: Behind the Scenes of My Latest MK44 Build

Coming back from ScaleACT24 and diving into a packed schedule of model-building and content creation has been both challenging and rewarding. Today, I’m excited to share a behind-the-scenes look at my latest MK44 build for the updated Vol. 1: the HAMMERKNIGHT.

Inspired by production-line shots of F-16s, I’ve gone for a mixed primer application to achieve a dynamic, slightly “hectic” look. Pre-mottled base coats add texture and depth, setting the stage for an experiment in brush-applied water-based acrylics—a technique many of you have been asking about. This build is shaping up to be a refined evolution of my earlier MK44 Axeknight.

Over the past 2 years, I’ve gained invaluable insights from working on 12+ finishes, attending model shows, and even revisiting the Australian War Memorial in Canberra twice. I’m pouring all that inspiration into this project and documenting every step to turn it into a deep-dive instructional tutorial.

One unique challenge is the HAMMERKNIGHT’s Bazooka. While it looks fantastic in a closed-suit pose, it’s tricky to balance for an open-suit display. I’m working on a solution, and it might even become the new cover model for Vol. 1, replacing the Axeknight!

I’m also considering how to differentiate interiors for terrestrial and space suits—something that could add more depth and storytelling to the build. If you’ve got thoughts on this, I’d love to hear them!

Stay tuned for updates as this build comes together. - Linc
